Reduced mobile complexity scheme for fast fading channel estimation in OFDM-FDD mobile communication systems

Multicarrier techniques are being considered in various applications. One particular multicarrier modulation format, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), has been investigated for possible use in mobile communications (Cimini, 1985). With the OFDM format and to combat the effect of the multipath fading channel in mobile communications, an amplitude and phase correction scheme using a frequency pilot has also been investigated previously (McGeehan and Bateman, 1983; and Lenaerd and Sollenberger, 1980). However, this correction process overloads the mobile receiver with additional complexity which results in a more complex mobile handset with higher power consumption as well as higher cost. In this paper a new frequency pilot based correction scheme is proposed. This scheme is applicable on systems operating with OFDM and frequency division duplexing (FDD). The proposed scheme is suitable for fast fading channels.
