Some Rules for Introducing Indexing Paths in a Primary File

A framework is developed which places in perspective with other approaches a model developed by Kollias (1976) for the selection of indexing paths in a primary file. The paper extends the model and proves a number of properties which characterise it. These properties not only simplify the solution of the model but they can also be used by file designers as rules when selecting indexing paths for their applications. (Received January 1979)
