Aggregate resource efficiency

The claims that radical reductions can be made in resource use in industrialised countries are tested using empirical evidence on materials throughput for the United States, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands. While there is evidence of improvements in relative resource productivity, patterns of improvement appear to be long-term, country-specific, and not rapid enough to enable current targets to be met. The chapter concludes with a discussion of policy options for materials management.
