The Antibacterial and Aroma Finishing of Cotton Fabrics by Eucalyptus globulus Extract

ABSTRACT Eucalyptus globulus bio extract was applied on woven cotton textiles for antibacterial and aroma finish. Molecular characterisation was done by using FTIR. Chemical groups responsible for antibacterial behaviour and the chemical structure of this plant were investigated through GCMS. Eucalyptus globulus treated fabric has greater colour depth (K/S) in comparison to original fabric. The mordanted fabrics were treated with Eucalyptus globulus solution and evaluated for antibacterial activity against Escherichia.coli (Gram negative bacteria) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria) by Agar Well Diffusion method. Zone of inhibition of 16 mm to 26 mm was measured for the different treated fabrics against Escherichia.coli (Gram negative bacteria) in comparison to 18 mm to 32 mm for Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria). Zone of inhibition in treated fabrics reveal that the antibacterial effect is more potent against gram positive bacteria. There is decrease in zone of inhibition for both gram negative and gram positive bacteria after 20 washing cycles. However, Eucalyptus globulus treated fabric can retain 56.2% to 88.5% of its initial antibacterial property even after 20 washing cycles. Cotton fabrics also generate fragrance after treatment. Fragrance intensity ratings of 200 respondents have been documented and evaluated.
