The future of remote sensing

Abstract Advances in the technologies of commercial remote sensing suggest that we have only just begun to see the real potential in this field. However, the policy framework for remote sensing has been extremely weak. The effort to commercialize the US Landsat system has been a policy failure, creating considerable uncertainty about the future role of the United States in the remote-sensing arena. The value of Landsat has been considerable, making it a national asset worthy of considerable political and budgetary support. A new Administration in the White House will provide an opportunity for fresh thinking and necessary leadership.
