PERCEPTION AND INFORMATION PROCESSING. IN: HUMAN FACTORS IN TRAFFIC SAFETY

In many ways, humans function as controllers in the transportation system; they can be considers providers of both input and output. This chapter focuses on information, looking at how it is received and then used by the driver. To fully understand the subject matter, it is necessary to understand the strengths and limitations of the human element as the major component in the transportation system. The following aspects are examined: perception of the road; visual search; the perception of speed; car following; auditory information; information processing and accidents; driver attention and workload; steering; and, positive guidance.
