This paper presents a novel type of an electro-rheological(ER) damper featuring controllable orifices by electric fields. As a first step, a dynamic model of the orifice type ER damper is formulated on the basis of Bingham model of the employed ER fluid. Field-dependent damping characteristics are then evaluated with respect to the piston velocity. Subsequently, vibration control performances of a passenger car installed with the proposed ER dampers are investigated under bump and random road profiles, and compared with those of a cylindrical ER dampers.
