Influence of soybean meal on growth and phosphorus availability in turkey poults.

Abstract HILL (1948) found that soybean meal improved the growth of chicks when it was added as the source of protein in diets made up of natural vegetable materials. He attributed this response to a growth factor which it contained. Kratzer et al. (1959) showed that soybean meal contained an organic growth promoting factor for turkey poults, a portion of which could be extracted with methanol. Wilcox et al. (1961a,b) also reported that soybean meal or a water extract made from it would increase the growth of poults. Carlson et al. (1964) reported that a water extract of either heated or raw soybean meal gave a growth response in poults when included in an isolated soybean protein-glucose diet. They also observed an increase in bone ash and partial prevention of a rachitic-like leg weakness which developed in poults fed the purified diet. Scott et al. (1956, 1962) used an isolated soybean …
