Abstract Falini P.E., Grifoni C. and Lomoro A., 1980. Conservation planning for the countryside: a preliminary report of an experimental study of the Terni basin (Italy). Landscape Plann. , 7: 345–367. Italy has had no active landscape policy since World War II, and the results of landscape degradation are obvious. A study has been made to determine the feasibility of a comprehensive landscape policy for areas of rural heritage, in particular the Terni basin, an area of Umbria, central Italy. Agricultural and historical analyses are presented as the basis of classification of the area into heterogeneous units, which, when defined, can help in the formulation of an active economic and social policy for similar areas.
