Principles of Organization in Intuitive and Analytical Cognition.

Abstract : This report continues the development of a theory of cognition that is intended to unify, rather than replace, the major approaches to judgment and decision making. Concepts referring to the organization of knowledge are enlarged and differentiated in relation to intuitive, quasi-rational and analytical modes of cognition. Definition and predictions of the occurrence of various principles of organization are provided. A new concept, the shifting locus of vicarious functioning, is also introduced and its explanatory potential is illustrated. The implications of the foregoing for unifying problem solving research and theory with that of decision research and theory are put forward.
