A finite element analysis of the MSP single pole perpendicular recording head

This work presents a linear finite element analysis of a new single-sided M-shaped single pole(MSP) recording head for use in perpendicular magnetic recording with a double-layered medium. The magnetic interaction between the head and backlayer is analyzed for both the record and reproduce cases. For a fixed geometry, the permeabilities of the backlayer and the main pole control the interaction. The analysis indicates that either reducing the flux return path length through the backlayer or increasing the permeability of the backlayer will greatly enhance the read and write efficiencies. In effect, the backlayer must be considered as part of the head from a design point of view, and not merely as a keeper for the perpendicular storage layer.
