X-ray microscopy of laser produced counterstreaming plasmas — investigation of population inversion in [He]-like Al

Abstract Spatially resolved images of the emission regions of selected [He]-like Al spectral lines w1-2, w1-3, w1-4 have been recorded using spherically and toroidally bent quartz crystals. The line emission has been studied concerning a laser-produced Al-plasma streaming against an Au-plasma. The latter one is created at an Au-target by the emitted X-rays from the Al-plasma. The comparison of the w1-3 and w1-4 line intensities in two dimensions show the possibility of the existence of a population inversion concerning levels of the n =4, 3 manifolds in Al XII .
