A packet scheduling algorithm supporting multimedia traffic over the HSDPA link based on early delay notification

The paper focuses on the packet scheduling of data generated by multimedia applications which consist of various traffic classes (on-off packet train, periodic and block), each with its own quality of service (QoS) requirements. The performance of a new packet scheduling algorithm, called Max-SIR with early delay notification (EDN), was compared with those of the following algorithms: DSDFQ; PF; Max-SIR; Max-Delay. It was found that the proposed algorithm was most effective in reducing the fraction of periodic traffic dropped when compared to other algorithms. However, this benefit was obtained at the expense of a higher dropping probability for the block traffic component and also higher average delays for the on-off and periodic traffic components. The algorithm provides a mechanism to strike a balance between the percentages of traffic dropped for each component of a multimedia session by proper adjustment of two threshold coefficients.
