Simulation and evaluation of Low Voltage Ride Through protection techniques for DFIG

Due to the increase penetration of wind generation within the electric utility grid, grid codes required the wind generation to comply with Low-Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) capability so that they can remain online and support the electric grid after the fault removal. During this low voltage events the DFIG will be subjected to high surge current caused by sudden drop of the grid voltage. Different protection techniques are used to protect the DFIG during this low voltage events. In this paper two methods Crowbar and series dynamic resistances for protection of DFIG during LV events are implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results by PSCAD/EMTDC show the difference between the two different methods, their advantages and their performance during the low voltage events.
