Smart ping pong racket by ultrathin piezoelectric strain sensor array

We have newly developed a smart table tennis racket contains a 5 × 5 array of ultrathin piezoelectric sensors between a wood paddle and rubber. Since this racket has highly sensitive sensor mounted in an array, not only a ball impact localization but also a stroke type classification can be analyzed in detail. This contribution is the pioneer work to address a MEMS- based sensor system for table tennis rackets that has the potential to be used in training exercises and games to assist table tennis players during matches and to support the athletes training progress.
