High-gain 1D EBG resonator antenna

Theoretical and experimental results are presented for a high-gain electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) resonator antenna. This antenna uses a 1D EBG material made from low-dielectric-constant substrates, which results in a low-profile geometry. The operating frequency of the antenna is accurately predicted using dielectric multilayer theory. Theoretical results calculated using the FDTD method for the gain, directivity, return loss, efficiency, and radiation patterns are shown to be in good agreement with the measured performance of a test antenna. We also describe the behavior of the antenna as a function of frequency over the operating bandwidth, and examine the dependence of directivity on aperture size. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
