Wear studies using acoustic emission techniques

Abstract This paper describes measurements of acoustic emission RMS signals obtained from sliding metallic contacts. The results show that RMS measurements are able to differentiate between different wear mechanisms occurring in both dry and lubricated contacts. Further, for the test conditions studied there is a direct empirical relationship between the integrated RMS signal and the wear volume removed from the test ball.
