INTERACTION PROBLEM OF CIRCULAR FOOTINGS ON HOMOGENEOUS SOIL DEPOSIT

In this paper, the effect of interference between two nearby surface circular footings are determined by conducting a number of laboratory scaled model tests on dry medium dense homogeneous Ennore sand bed. To explore the interference effect, the influence of clear spacing (S) between the footings on the bearing capacity and settlement of interfering footing is studied and a significant change in the bearing capacity and settlement of the interfering footing is observed with the variation in spacing. For the interfering footing, the ultimate bearing capacity increases with decrease in spacing between the footings. The settlement behavior of the interfering footing follows the same trend as the bearing capacity. Finally, the results in terms of efficiency factors ( , / ) are presented and their variation is reported with respect to the change in clear spacing (S) between the footings.
