The Contribution of Information Technology to the Performance of Smes: Alignment of Critical Dimensions

The relationship between information technology and business performance has been a focus of IS research in recent years. An empirical study was conducted among 114 small and medium-sized enterprises from various industrial sectors to validate a research model linking the alignment of information technology with strategy, structure, and environment to performance. It was found that both IT-strategy and IT-structure alignments had a significant effect on performance, depending upon the way in which “fit” is conceptualized and operationalized, whereas the IT-environment alignment had no effect whatsoever.
