Planning, building, efficiency measurement and determination of forecast data of a grid-scale hybrid 5 MW / 5 MWh battery storage system

Pushed through an increasing amount of renewable energy sources in the German grid, the fluctuation in energy generation rises. Therefore, a balancing system which takes the grid stabilizing role is necessary. Depending on the time periods of the chosen sales channels, different storage systems can be used. For short and middle time spans an electrochemical system like a battery energy storage system (BESS) can be integrated into the grid. In order to investigate in which way a BESS can operate economically and which services can be offered for grid stabilization, a 5.8 MW and 5.6 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) was designed and built. Within this contribution, the setup will be explained. Moreover, the efficiency and the power forecast data will be analyzed and verified.
