번역에서의 어휘의 형태와 의미의 관계에 대한 의미론적 분석

In translation, a representation of a text in a source language (SL) should be replaced by an equivalent representation in the target language (TL). However, in reality, such a requirement is not often met because of the discrepancy in forms and meanings between the SL and the TL. This research explores the relationships between forms and meanings of expressions in translation in terms of de Saussure's distinction between the signifier and the signified. Based on the four possible types in the classification, this research shows how words/phrases in English are translated into equivalent expressions in Korean. It also shows how words in the SL are translated or represented in other ways when equivalent expressions are not available in the TL. After showing examples of translated words, this research discusses problems and difficulties in one-to-one direct translation. After that, this study discusses some remaining problems in the translation of metaphorical expressions and socially relevant expressions, among others.
