Spectral tuned amorphous silicon p-i-n for DNA detection

Abstract In this paper we report on a detection system for fluorochrome labeled DNA based on amorphous silicon technology. The system works without optics for focusing and filtering both the excitation and the emitted radiation. The detector is an n–i–p structure whose quantum efficiency has been optimized at the wavelength emission peak of the fluorochrome. The optimization process has been performed by using a numerical device simulator, which takes into account the properties of the amorphous materials. Characterization of the system leads to a detection limit of 3 nmol/l. Taking into account the specific activity of labeled DNA in the solution, the above concentration corresponds to 50 fmol/cm 2 .
