Standardization of Allergenicity Assessment of Transgenic Products

Before any GM (genetically modified) food entering market, it has to be comprehensively evaluated for safety in nutrition, toxicology, allergenicity, and other aspects of food science. This article gives a brief review on allergenicity assessment approaches proposed by several international organizations. A variety of tests and questions should be considered to determine whether the GM product has any increased risk of allergenicity. Along with economic globalization, it becomes more and more important for safety assessment of GMO (genetically modified organism) allergenicity be conformed with international standards. It is in urgent need to establish a comprehensive and scientific assessment system on allergenic potential that could reflect current technical conditions in China.
