Identification of inosine and inosine 5'-monophosphate as the gustatory feeding stimulants for the turbot, Scophthalmus maximus

Abstract 1. 1. A simple whole-animal bioassay was developed for the study of the feeding stimulants for the turbot Scophthalmus maximus . 2. 2. Certain nucleosides and nucleotides were found to act as specific feeding stimulants at low concentrations. 3. 3. The following molecular features were essential for activity: (i) purine ring; (ii) oxygen function on position 6; (iii) hydrogen or amino group on position 2; (iv) hydroxyl groups on 2' and 3' positions.
