A SAFETY CHECKLIST FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF IN-VEHICLE INFORMATION SYSTEMS

This paper describes work to establish a method for assessing the extent to which a specific in-vehicle information system (IVIS) supports the safety and effectiveness principles recently sponsored by the European Community. It describes the development and design of a safety checklist that allows experts to make a rapid and structured assessment of the key features of an IVIS. The Checklist has been developed through a process of international consultation and application to candidate IVIS. It has been used to assess a number of systems and example results are presented for an in-car entertainment system. Initial experience of use has shown it to be a useful first tool in assessing human machine interaction safety
