Surface texture - a review.

Surface texture is an important aspect of visual appearance and methods to provide measures that correlate with visual perception are not yet defined. A large number of studies have been made on texture analysis and, in this report, some of the more widely used methods are introduced. There appears however, to be no best method to describe and extract features of texture, such as micro-texture for medical diagnosis or macro-texture for satellite image analysis, from texture images. In addition, these methods do not take into account the human visual system, for example its ability to respond to spatial contrast. To investigate the correlation between the results from methods of texture analysis and the perception of real samples, the performance of some of the analysis methods was compared with the results of a perceptual scaling experiment.
