Factors contributing to the decay of limestone inside a museum are reviewed and an analytical procedure is described which is used to predict whether sculptures may be cleaned and desalted by washing. Soluble chlorides and acid-insoluble residue are analyzed in the stone. Degreasing, water washing and poultice treatment are described. Painting traces are protected with soluble nylon.
