HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE MODULARITY FOR SHIPBOARD SYSTEMS

Multi-hierarchical information processing and control systems offer high reliability and expandability when modularity of software and hardware are coincident. The multi-hierarchical architecture permits autonomous major subsystem operation provided that Hardware/Software modules are restricted to designated subsystem functions. Developments in microprocessing have made the multi-hierarchical approach not only feasible, but economically attractive. A combat system example is used for illustration.
