Temperature effects on starch granules in developing barley grains

A Coulter Counter was used to determine size and number distributions of starch granules in a detailed investigation of starch deposition during the development of barley grains on whole plants grown at different temperatures. Results indicate that decreases in grain dry matter, at elevated temperatures, are due to a reduction in both the volume available for starch accumulation and the numbers, rather than sizes, of starch granules deposited. Numbers of both the ‘A-type’ and the smaller or ‘B-type’ granule populations were affected by elevated temperatures.
