Study on the influence of mining on land use/cover change using satellite image

In China, more than 60% consumption of energy sources is related to coal. A negative result of this is the influence on the significant change of land use/cover. In this paper the influence of mining on land use/cover change using satellite image is studied. As the analysis basis, the TM and ETM+ data of September 1988, September 1995 and September 2002 that cover the whole coalfield were acquired. And the ancillary data consists of topographical map with a scale of 1:10,000, a soil map, a land use map, a social-economic statistical data and the annual exploitation planning map of the coalmine. The analysis process includes the geometric correction and geo-reference using the digital topographical map, the radiometric correction, the conversion of DEM, the registration of soil map and land use map, the land subsidence regions forecast and registration, the image stretch and enhancements, the supervised classification and so on. The results of these studies indicate that the land use/cover changed greatly from 1988 to 2002 in the study area. The land had degenerated greatly in this period. The analysis showed that the degeneration has a close correlation with the exploitation activities
