This paper addresses the issue of night-time delivery restrictions placed on retail stores in the UK. Relevant literature from the UK and elsewhere concerned with this topic is reviewed. This review has a specific focus on research that has studied the benefits and impacts of a reduction in night-time delivery restrictions. The paper identifies the potential costs and benefits to different actors of removing/relaxing night-time delivery restrictions. It also outlines the costs and benefits that ideally need to be quantified in future research to study whether the benefits of changing existing night-time delivery restrictions are likely to outweigh the costs. The recent establishment of a joint industry/government working group to review potential alternatives to delivery time restrictions at retail sites in the UK is also discussed.
