GhostSwimmer™ AUV: Applying Biomimetics to Underwater Robotics for Achievement of Tactical Relevance

Unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and other waterborne robots are able to address critical capability requirements for many customers; however, they are subject to challenges, including limited communications and harsh environments, which create capability gaps. The GhostSwimmer™ is being developed as a tactical, biomimetic autonomous "artificial fish" UUV that will provide advanced mobility in a system that employs payloads. This paper details challenges to overcome for future AUVs; the science of biomimetics and how it intersects with underwater operation; leveraging biology to advance the state of the art; and the present and future of biomimetic underwater robotics.
