According to the invention a method to cancel a braking action of a headway control system of a vehicle is proposed in which takes place when oversteering of the headway control system according to a predetermined algorithm by the driver, the cancellation of the braking action. The algorithm is designed in such a case that a jerk-free transition from deceleration to acceleration of the motor vehicle is ensured, and thus an increase of the driving comfort is achieved. The transition from deceleration to acceleration is preferably carried out according to a linear function. In a further embodiment of the invention in stages functions be provided. In order not to break prematurely the braking operation by accidental operation of the accelerator pedal, is provided for an acceleration request of the driver to set a threshold value for the accelerator pedal. This threshold value is dependent on the delay in braking. The higher the deceleration is, the stronger the driver has to operate the accelerator pedal to start the acceleration process. With little delay, the threshold value is lower, so that a slight depression of the accelerator pedal is sufficient to bring about an acceleration of the motor vehicle.
