This book describes methods of risk analysis, explaining the procedures and the results of a number of studies including the German Risk Study, Phase B and NUREG-1500. The basic concepts of risk analysis are defined, followed by a description of methods of risk analysis in the field of nuclear energy studies with regard to light water, fast breeder and high temperature reactors and for the nuclear fuel cycle with relevant results detailed. At the same time, known preceding incidents or series of events leading up to severe accidents are covered. Risk studies for different process plants are described and their objectives and methods of analysis compared. These approaches are also compared with that of the German Risk Study, Phase A. Risk comparisons for nuclear, conventional and renewable energy sources are examined. Technical and legal aspects of safety evaluation for nuclear power plants in the FRG are discussed. The book concludes with an overview of safety goals in different countries.
