The paper, by N. W. Allardice, was published in Vol. 21, No. 12, pp. 501-9 (December 1966). It describes the structural design and construction of a 10-story reinforced concrete building and comments upon aspects that represent departures from normal practice. The building has stiff columns and relatively flexible prestressed ansotropic ribbed flat plate floors, each floor being subdivided into four equal sections by hinged joints that can transmit shear forces while acting as shrinkage and thermal movement control joints. The columns and the flat plate are designed to be monolithic and develop frame action to resist seismic and live loads.
