Deliberate and planned surgical operations on the auditory labyrinth for the relief of infective, processes which have extended to it miiay be said to date frol-m the publication by Jansen [14] of his classical cases at the Moscow Medical Congress in 1897. Much addition to our knowledge of the subject was made by Hinsberg [10] in an imi-portant paper in 1902, and, following this, attention was drawn to the subject in this country by Dr. Milligan [20] and Mr. Whitehead [38].
