Efficient solution of quadratic eigenproblems arising in dynamic analysis of structures

Abstract The combination of the simultaneous iteration and the Lanczos method with the generalized Rayleigh quotient is shown to give two powerful methods for solving large quadratic eigenproblems arising in many engineering applications. The two methods are presented in parallel for the symmetric and unsymmetric case, and the features of both are discussed and compared. Applications of the Lanczos technique to some problems are briefly discussed.
