Electrocardiographic studies during endotracheal intubation and inflation of the cuff.

The e.c.g. changes associated with intubation and inflation of the cuff using three standard leads have been studied in 40 cases. The two most significant changes observed were, firstly, changes in the direction of the electrical axis which occurred in most cases and, secondly, the absence of a pressor response to intubation in those cases which received hexamethonium. Changes in the P and T waves and in the PQ, QRS and QTc intervals are reported. In one case a nodal rhythm occurred on inflation of the cuff, in a second case an ST depression increased after inflation and in a third case ventricular extrasystoles disappeared on intubation.
