A new type of display device (transient scattering mode device) utilizing transient light scattering in ferroelectric liquid crystal accompanied by domain switching by field application is proposed and shows excellent characteristics. The switching time is in the µs range and is shorter in material with larger spontaneous polarization and at higher fields. The contrast is also extremely high compared with other devices. The optical polarizer and special technique for the molecular alignment are not necessary in this device.
