TEAM PROCESSES AND THEIR TRAINING IN AVIATION. IN: HANDBOOK OF AVIATION HUMAN FACTORS

This paper presents some recent research findings on the aviation team processes and how they are trained. The focus is on cockpit crews for the following reasons: most of the teamwork research has been done with cockpit crews; and, much of what is being learned with cockpit crews is being adapted to other teams. First, theoretical developments are addressed, with a background review of team process research, a rationale for the importance of this research to aviation teams, and an overview of some research for identifying team processes in aviation environments. This is followed by a section where the measurement of those processes and the progress made in measurement tool development are discussed. Some strategies for training teamwork are explained and a short discussion is provided of some major trends in aviation team training research.
