Requirements for municipal supply companies have risen considerably in the past years. Increasing competition forces the supply companies to quickly react by flexible adaption of their marketing strategies. They are furthermore compelled to open themselves up to free economy competition by reducing costs as well as providing customer-oriented services. In this connection, the municipal supply company of Heilbronn has already made an effort to reduce costs by pre-installing gas- and water building supply lines in residential areas. Since end of 1997 a total of 650 ea building supply lines have been pre-installed in seven residential settlements. Experiences we have made so far meet out expectations to a great extend. It is however obvious that savings resulting from pre-installation are dependend on the economical situation as well as mode of solicitation for bids (public or limited) when compared to conventional installation. Organizations in charge of road maintenance may benefit most from this new alternative of development, because later excavations in public areas can almost be definetely excluded.
