For automotive short range applications, i.e. for distances up to 20 m, at the Technical University of Hamburg a radar network based on cheap 24 GHz high range resolution pulse radar technology was integrated into an experimental vehicle and tested in a real street environment. This paper presents a description of the network design, the individual pulse radar sensors, the network signal processing and possible automotive applications of the radar network, respectively. Object position estimation is accomplished by the very precise range measurement of each individual sensor and additional multilateration procedures. This radar network has been integrated into the front bumper of an experimental car for detailed measurement campaign in normal street and traffic situations. The paper concludes with a few results measured with the experimental vehicle in realistic traffic conditions.
