Proceedings of the 2010 ACM SIGCOMM workshop on Home networks, HomeNets@SIGCOMM 2010, New Delhi, India, September 3, 2010

Welcome to the 2010 ACM SigComm Workshop on Home Networks -- HomeNets 2010. As researchers, practitioners, and users, we wish for a digital home that seamlessly integrates a variety of wireless and wired devices and sensors, enables easy content sharing, and enriches our user experience through advanced services. Today's reality, however, is far from that. The home networking environment is a complex mix of heterogeneous technologies, and devices, all operating independently of each other, and certainly not offering the set of services originally imagined. As the number of devices inside the home increases, and their functionality becomes more complex, we foresee complexity imposing a barrier in the adoption of technology inside homes and a lot of frustration on the part of the users that try to deal with the pain of management and debugging of home services. The goal of this workshop is to bring researchers and practitioners to share new ideas and experiences and to discuss the challenges and important questions posed by today's and future home networks. Homenets 2010 received 17 submissions, out of which 10 papers were selected for presentation at the workshop. We are glad to have selected an inter-disciplinary program that spans network management, security, wireless networking, and user facing issues, traditionally addressed within the Human Computer Interaction community. The lack of IT personnel inside the home mandates a cross-disciplinary approach that incorporates users' needs and preferences in the design and operation of the home network. We are certain that such a tie will also be eloquently presented in the keynote speech by Prof. Keith Edwards from the Georgia Institute of Technology, whose pioneering work in the area has inspired a lot of us working in the area of home networks.
