Current concepts in meniscal injuries

Meniscal injuries are common. The traditional treatment had been excision of the torn meniscus. Repair of the torn meniscus is a relatively new concept. The present article reviews the current concepts of the management of torn menisci with emphasis on the various techniques of the repair. The experience of the authors of repairing 27 menisci has also been presented. Of the 27 repaired menisci, 9 were lateral and 18 were medial. 7 lateral (77.77%) and 6 medial (33.33%) meniscal tears were associated with anterior cruciate injury. All the patients with repaired menisci were young with an average age of 22.4 years (range 18 to 26 years). Repair was done by using outside - in technique with 2-0 PDS suture. Mean follow up was 2.5 years (Range 1 to 4 years). There was one failure requiring partial meniscectomy. All the other patients returned to the original occupation with mean Lysholm score of 98.9.
