ANALYSIS OF CABLE STAYED BRIDGES

This paper presents the study of the effect of variation of cable area on the behaviour of a cable stayed bridge. A cable stayed bridge with 36 cables in one plane has been analysed on a digital computer IBM 360. Three cases of side-span ratios (0.35, 0.40 and 0.45) have been investigated. The cable tension increases with increase in the cable area while girder deflections, bending moments in the girder and the cost of the structure decrease. After a certain value the effect of increase of cable area on the forces and deflections is very small. The curves showing the variation of the forces and deflections have a tendency to become asymptotic to the cable area axis. (Author/TRRL)
