Study on Shunt reactor energization effects on power transformers

A Shunt reactor energization produces a decayed direct current in the network leading to phenomena which some of them are currently high-interest topics in the power system study. One of these phenomena is the DC bias in the magnetic core flux of the power transformer. This phenomenon caused some problem in the 400/132/20 kV transformer of the Golfaraj substation at the commissioning phase leading to the current research to find out the problem and its solution. This research investigates the effect of the shunt reactor energization on the power transformers using the PSCAD/EMTDC software to understand the phenomena better. In this paper, first of all, the phenomenon mechanism is explained in detail using a simple network, then, the different parameters affecting this phenomenon are studied like the effect of the line parameters, the transformer connections and etc.
