Discussion on Women's Self-consciousness in "The Mill on the Floss"

"The Mill on the Floss" is one of the most famous novels of George Eliot.In the novel,the heroine Maggie had her trial of self-realization throughout her life.But her trial often had a confliction with duty and pressure from her family.This essay explores Eliot's expectation on women in patriarchal society by analyzing two periods in their self-consciousness: renunciation and self-sacrifice.
