Studies on the arterial system of three inbred strains of mice

The study of vascular variation in iiiaii and other mammals Iias been mainly descriptive arid little is known of the extent to which it is under genetical control. Hnman family studies are difficult since few of these variants can be recognized in the living subject ( l o r an csccption, see Pipkin et al., 'X!). I n aiiimals, some degree of control by the genotype i s indicated by rascular differences ljetmeen inbred strains of rabbits involving thc aortic arch (Edmoncls and Sm-iii, '36 ; Sawin and Edrnontls, '49), tlie inferior veiia c a w ( AIcNntt and Raw-in, '43) arid thc ilio-lumbar arteries (Sawin anti Nace, '48). A systematic comparison of tlie vascular pattern in hiqhliv inbred strains is thc most hopcfiil way to hegin an analysis of the factors responsible fo r this aspect of anatomical form. This paper presents some of the resrilts o f such a stLic1y 011 three inbred strains of micc wliicli have already heeii exteiisivcly used for skeletal studies by Gruiicbcrg and his collahorators.
