Current Status and Perspective of Worldwide Disease Burden of Pertussis

Pertussis is a bacterial infectious disease which has a higher mortality in children.The incidence of pertussis has declined to very low levels as a result of mass vaccination for a long time.However,in the past decade,there has been a strong and unexpected resurgence in reported cases in western countries.We reviewed the epidemiological features of pertussis and analyzed the underlying factors attribute to such changes.On the other hand,we compared current status and trend of pertussis incidence in China with western countries.It is strongly recommended to investigate the disease burden of pertussis in China by prospective studies in the near future.
