Measurements of the alignments of typewritten characters—preliminary findings

A system is described which can measure the positions of characters within typescript to an accuracy of 0.02mm. A method of analysis to establish the degrees of misalignment of characters within typewritten texts has been devised. The results from a preliminary study of ten characters in samples from nine typewriters are presented.
